The cross, the tree of life, is an old symbol.
If we draw a horizontal and a vertical line through the center of the circle we see a static cross appearing. The lines meet in the center.

Here we see a very old variation on the ancient "Sonnenrad, the sun gear". The vertical line stands for the infinite, Cosmic Consciousness, the mind and the horizontal line for the Creative Principle, the matter.
The circle means eternity or the solar year, and the four arms of the cross to the four wind regions: north, east, south and west and the four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. The ancients told that the 4 archangels where keeping the guard on the four corners: Gabriel, Archangel of the West, Ariel, Archangel of the north, Michael archangel of the south and  Raphael Archangel of the east. Referring to this cardinal points means stability and anchoring. It also symbolizes power, and the ever revolving cycle of life.

The American Indians considered the symbol of the cross within a circle as the "magic wheel", the "life cycle" or the "circle of the seasons"
With the Egyptians and the Greeks, the horizontal line stands for the passive or feminine principle of nature, and the vertical line for the masculine, energetic aspect and the generative power.
Another form of the cross is the Hebrew letter tau, the cross with a handle or ansated, in Egypt the ankh.

In its mystical sense the tau, is also named the World Tree or tree of Life who made heaven and earth to span. Already in ancient times trees were associated with gods and mystical forces of nature. Every nation had its sacred tree.
The tree is the symbol of balance and harmony between three worlds: body, soul and spirit or past, present, future. Many Trees of life are depicted in a pot, which represents Mother Earth, from which all life arises.
The Tree of Life, provides an archetypal image of the yearning for unity. Many of the traditional dances are based on this archetype. We see them worldwide , with other names and variations, but having the same fundament and pattern.

While dancing we can feel how closely we are connected with Mother Earth and how we can feel and pass on her friendship, support and loving presence. Here we make contact with her gentle energy that during centuries offers us so much: unconditionality.

The static cross symbolizes time and space, with all its possibilities and its limitations, the earth in all its dimensions. The cross represents our lives, our existence. The vertical axis represents the time, the horizontal axis the space. Everything  we do takes place "somewhere" during a certain time and on a certain place. Here we sense a direction, a purpose: "where do I come from – where am I going too?" I come from an unknown origin, in the night (moon) and grow into the highness  to the light, the sun, the future. The space axis symbolizes the move that I make from me to you. I open myself in order to connect with the others both left and right.

The dynamic cross or Andrew Cross is diagonal. It connects us to the planets or the entire cosmos, and with the four elements: earth, water, air and fire.

Everyone dances in their own dynamics, orientation and identity. Everyone will identify and or recognize themselves and / or others in one way or another in the way he dances, the way he let come in or interpret the steps, the melody or rhythm. Briefly:  when is someone "in his element"?
The element fire is connected to the Sun; fire is spontaneous and direct, warm and distinct. Fire wants to transform and initiate.
The element earth is connected to the planet Venus; Earth is decent, friendly and harmonious. Earth wants to meet.
The element air is connected to the planet Saturn. Air is consciousness, power and individuality. Air wants to create.
The element water is connected to the planet Mars. Water is renewal, liberation. Water wants to empathise, to feel, it is intuitive and mysterious.

The fully conscious acceptance of your life, of yourself, of whom you are and of the others and of how they are, can bring you closer to the center of the cross or to what you are in your deepest being.
